If you have been trying to understand where your AI-referred traffic is coming from, you have probably been doing it the hard way building custom regex filters, cross-referencing UTM parameters, and making educated guesses about which sessions landed in your Direct channel because a user tapped a link inside ChatGPT or Gemini.In 2026, Google Analytics 4 made that process significantly simpler with the introduction of a dedicated AI Assistant default channel group. For the first time, sessions originating from major conversational AI platforms are automatically classified in their own channel, separate from Organic Search, Direct, and Referral.This is not a minor housekeeping update. It is a structural change to how you measure the growing share of your traffic that comes from AI-driven discovery and getting it right matters.Why this update existsThe rise of conversational AI as a discovery channel has created a persistent analytics problem. When a user interacts with ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Claude and follows a link to your website, the referral signal carried in the HTTP request varies significantly by platform.Some AI platforms pass a recognisable referrer header — chat.openai.com, gemini.google.com — that analytics tools can identify. Others strip referrer information entirely, causing the session to appear as Direct traffic. Still others use redirect chains that obscure the original source.The result is that most analytics accounts have been systematically under-counting AI-referred traffic, absorbing unknown portions of it into Direct, and misattributing it to other channels. For businesses whose content has been gaining citation traction in AI Overviews and conversational AI responses, this has meant that a genuine growth signal has been invisible in reporting.The new AI Assistant channel addresses the known-referrer portion of this problem.How the AI Assistant channel worksGA4\'s AI Assistant channel uses referrer header detection to automatically classify sessions from recognised conversational AI platforms. The system assigns these sessions the medium value ai-assistant, groups them under the AI Assistant channel, and labels them with the campaign name (ai-assistant).The classification is automatic. You do not need to create a new channel group rule, apply custom definitions, or configure anything in the GA4 interface. If your GA4 property was already collecting data before May 13, the reclassification applies going forward from the update date. Historical data prior to that date remains classified under its original attribution.The platforms that trigger this classification include the major conversational AI products ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and others that pass legible referrer headers. Sessions from AI products that do not pass referrer headers will continue to arrive as Direct traffic. This is a known limitation of the current system, and it means that the AI Assistant channel will represent an undercount of total AI-referred traffic  but it is a measurable, trackable undercount rather than complete invisibility.Sessions originating from native mobile app versions of AI products, or from users who copy and paste a link rather than tapping it, will also continue to land in Direct. The channel captures referred clicks from web-based AI interfaces, which currently represent the largest share of AI discovery traffic.What to do in GA4 right nowStep 1: Verify the channel is active in your property. Navigate to Admin > Data Display > Channel Groups in your GA4 property. You should see AI Assistant listed as a default channel. If you have a custom channel group set up, check whether your custom rules might be capturing AI referral traffic before it reaches the default classification. If so, update your custom rules to exclude AI assistant referrers or add an explicit AI Assistant rule at the top of your custom group hierarchy.Step 2: Create a dedicated exploration report for AI Assistant traffic. In the Explore section of GA4, build a free-form exploration with Session Default Channel Group as the primary dimension. Filter to show only the AI Assistant channel. Add metrics for Sessions, Engaged Sessions, Average Engagement Time, Conversions, and Revenue (if applicable). This gives you a clean view of AI-referred performance separate from your broader channel mix.Step 3: Compare AI Assistant vs Organic Search for the same pages.
